Statement of Purpose

Mission Statement

  • Western Strings provides opportunities for underserved children to learn musical expression through singing and playing musical instruments, incorporating local traditions and languages as appropriate.
  • Western Strings presents performances in rural western communities to foster connections, inspire new musicians, instill a sense of pride, and enrich culture.
  • Western Strings supports creative expression by linking musicians, students, organizations, and audiences.

Programs

  • In November, 2022, Western Strings began teaching violin classes for students in grades 3 - 6 on the Absáalooke (Crow) reservation in Lodge Grass, Montana.
  • We provide string music instruction at Plenty Coup schools in Pryor, Montana, at Veritas Academy, and after-school in Park 6 schools in Cody, Wyoming.

Testimonials

Third grade student

"I love the violin."

Instructor Kristi Kazmierski

"I know that introducing this string program to the kids in Lodge Grass has been a tremendous success. I witnessed the moment that it “clicked” with so many of them. It was amazing to see the change from this just being another class for them, to being a joyful part of their day. The children in Lodge Grass have experienced a spark of love for the violin and cello. I hope that spark can be extended and nourished into a life long passion."

Lodge Grass Classroom Teacher

"Before this they’ve never even thought of playing violins ever and I’m really glad that they got to experience it.”

Instructor Cassandra Shenk

"As an instructor in the program it was remarkable to see the children light up when they were able to play. They were very well mannered, and their teachers were supportive. It was a really beautiful experience!"
